Course Outline

6 modules containing 4-8 chapters each.

It is not advised to attempt to complete the whole course in less than 10 weeks.

But it could be easily spread out across as many as 40 weeks.

You and your child decide the pace.

A Life Without Music?

This module is all about becoming aware of just how much our lives are infiltrated by music and how we use it for many different functions. It explores our individual responses to different types of music and encourages active listening, movement and creative interpretations as well as creating their own instruments.

Become a composer

Module 2 teaches and explores the concept of pitch and how it applies to all of life as well as music. We dive right into storytelling, constructing a composition and an introduction to rudimentary notation - visually communicating their ideas and bringing their composition to life.

The Rhythm of Life

This is all about exploring rhythm, the beat and all of the concepts that go with that. It will help them build their aural skills, develop their sense of a strong beat, explore their rhythmic and poetic creativity and use their whole bodies to feel and perform beats, rhythms, grooves and moves! Includes a bonus body percussion lesson.

Making Melodies

Module 4 starts to draw on some of their new, previously learned skills and goes deeper into learning real notation, reading, singing and performing melodies. Children learn to recognise notes on a keyboard and xylophone and compose and perform their own tunes. There is also a bonus ukelele lesson for anyone up for it.

Instrumental Investigations

This module explores a wide array of instruments and how they are used in different genres and cultures. Their ear will be put to the test as they learn about each instrument, they will learn to categorise and discover how they work together to create one big picture. Includes a bonus tech lesson on Garage Band!

Around the World

This module focuses primarily on exploring and understanding the function of music in Australia's indigenous culture. A special guest comes to share their knowledge and love for the culture and to inspire deeper thought regarding its significance. We also explore traditional music of other cultures around the world.

Private lessons?

  • While they are awesome, at this young age they are not always necessary or even beneficial due to the discipline and fine motor skills required to succeed. Your young child may run the risk of losing interest.

  • It's limited to learning that one instrument

Youtube or apps?

  • These apps can be fun at first but lose their appeal after a while

  • They leave massive gaps in your musical understanding and technique and don't have much in the way of good foundational material. It’s important to start well, and these apps are just like fruit loops. They may be fun in the moment but in the long run they're just not going to give you solid lasting benefits.

  • Australian content is almost non-existent

Music group classes?

  • Pricey & don't usually cater to school ages

  • Some children don't like large groups or need flexibility to go at their own pace

  • Noisy

  • Move too fast or too slow

FAQ'S

Q:   How long do we have access to this course for?

A:    At this point in time you will have lifetime access! You will be able to go back and repeat sections your child enjoyed or use it all over again with younger siblings.

Q:   Can my child still benefit if they already have private instrumental lessons?

A:   Yes!! Very much so. There may be some content they already know but at this young age repetition is key anyway. As for the rest of it, there will be HEAPS your child has never done or learned before!

Q:   What if my child doesn't want to watch the videos or do the activities?

A:   That's fine! Since you have lifetime access you might find that in 6 months time they are ready to try it out. Just because they're not ready now doesn't mean they won't be. You can always watch the videos yourself and take ideas from the activities to try separate from the screen and activity book. Music can be incorporated into life in so many different ways!

I have been a music educator for 27 years and before that was raised in an exceptionally musical family, some of whom are Australia’s top Jazz performers and tertiary education lecturers. I grew up watching both parents and grandmother teaching private and group classes & running bands and choirs so it’s just in my blood!

I have taught privately in my own business with high standards and excellent results, at Forte Music School in Brisbane, a private primary school on the mid-north coast of NSW and ran a Kindermusik business.

I have been homeschooling my 3 children for 13 years and have seen a need that I can provide for but never been able to find the best, most efficient and comprehensive way to do it. Now I have exactly that and so proud to offer it to my community! I hope you love it, and keep and eye out for future creations!

TESTIMONIAL

IMG_6887.heic

MILLIE MASON

- piano & classroom student

- Now a classroom music teacher at the same school!

I’ve known Ali since 2002 as someone who has always enhanced, challenged and furthered my understanding of music. She was my second piano teacher and, in contrast to the first, inspired me to want to learn this instrument. Ali saw and met my needs and abilities where I was at. She nurtured the desire I had to go further in my music, taking me right through school from year 2 to year 12 with lessons and examinations, further advising me as I completed my bachelor of music in university, also.

Ali is a faithful and devoted teacher who shows her support for her students on many levels. Her teaching approach isn’t exclusive of musical style, ability or even a student’s personality. She will always be committed to bettering and broadening a person’s understanding of music from a holistic perspective. Ali’s comprehensive knowledge and background in music allows her to create realistic goals and have healthy expectations for a student as they learn. She maintains a firm, but gentle approach to teaching, making sure the student is understanding the skills being imparted to them.

Not only in private lessons does Ali excel, but also in the classroom. Ali successfully ran the music program of a private school from 2002(?)-2006, teaching Kindergarten to year 6. I learnt under her instruction in the classroom from 2003-2006. She provided us with learning experiences which simulated real life music situations.

My life is forever changed because of the opportunity I had to learn under Ali’s instruction. I strongly urge anyone who is considering undertaking this program to give it a really serious try. You’ll never know your potential if you don’t try. I’m really glad I did!

Holistic developmental benefits of Music Learning

Cognitive

Studies show that active participation in music enhances brain function in children. It stimulates the whole brain, which leads to improved brain structure as new neural connections are formed.

Language Skills

Music participation improves speech development and reading skills. It helps develop the left side of the brain (related to language and reasoning), assists with sound recognition, and teaches rhythm and rhyme.

Mathematical skills

Pattern-recognition, problem solving and even basic fractions. Children who study music also have improved spatial intelligence and ability to form mental pictures of objects – skills that are important for more advanced mathematics.

Memory, focus and attention

Recent studies have shown that people who are musically trained have better working memory skills, helping them to remember things even while their minds are busy with other matters – important aspects of mental arithmetic and reading comprehension

Co-ordination

Playing music and dancing helps children develop their motor skills. Making music involves more than the voice or fingers; you also use ears and eyes, as well as large and small muscles, all at the same time. This helps the body and the mind work together.

Creativity, joy & freedom

Music can give children a way to express themselves, to unleash their creativity, to be inspired and uplifted, to relax, and to relieve stress and tension.

Social & Emotional

Making music with other people improves social and emotional skills.  Kids learn to work together as a team and develop their sense of empathy with others. Researchers have found that when children play music together they are actually better able to tune into other people’s emotions.

Discipline

Learning music teaches children to work towards short-term goals, develop routine and practice self-discipline. Mastering a new musical skill leads to a sense of pride and achievement, and helps children to learn the value of self-discipline

WHAT PAST STUDENTS SAY

Simone Gissing
Workshop Attendee

I have attended a guitar workshop and a vocal workshop taught by Ali. As a complete novice in both areas I was a bit nervous, but Ali quickly put me at ease with her fun and friendly approach during the classes.

I was surprised how much I learnt and achieved during the workshops. Ali has an amazing amount of knowledge to share and explains things so well. I highly recommend learning with Ali

My 17yr old daughter and myself have done multiple singing and guitar lessons with Ali over the last 2 years. Ali is very good at communicating and teaching all different areas of music. She has a knack of adjusting and understanding what is needed to help you improve.  We both have enjoyed the process of learning with Ali leading the way.

Apart from her amazing technical skills Ali makes everyone feel comfortable and believe in their abilities. She explains the technical side of music in a way everyone can understand. Ali’s workshops are fun and the amount achieved in the allocated time frame is amazing.

Ali's passion and enthusiasm for music and musical therapy is infectious. Ali is able to bring out the multifaceted sides of music through different styles from classical, to jazz to lyrical. My love and appreciation for music and self confidence definitely blossomed through the love that Ali showed me as I was growing up learning piano and voice.

Ali is a caring teacher who has a natural musical gift. She is passionate about seeing her students thrive and engage in their studies, and she loves to have fun with them as well. I would happily recommend her.

Whenever I hear the song ‘somewhere over the rainbow’, I am taken back to the four walls of the room in which the ever-gracious Ali empowered me to use my voice and harness my raw musicality. Ali kept a picture of a rainbow on her walls which stated ‘The work will wait while you show the child the rainbow, but the rainbow won’t wait while you do the work.’

I was a student who struggled to see the rainbow for the rain. I had every passion and desire to excel at my craft with little focus or motivation to put in the practice to get there. Ali recognised this and encouraged me to find my strengths and passions, pushing me to be the best musician possible whilst bearing witness to the traits that made me, me.

Ali has fostered a love and deep respect for musicality in many other students I know, and I certainly would not be the confident vocalist I am without the years of piano and vocal lessons I was fortunate to receive. I would highly recommend Ali to anyone hoping to engage a patient, persistent, and eminent teacher.

IMG_1690.JPG

Monique Heather
Piano student

I had the privilege of having Ali as my music teacher for about 10 years throughout primary and high school in a classroom setting as well as private lessons. She championed me, challenged me and empowered me to grow in my musical ability. She saw potential in me that I didn’t even know existed at that time. From a young age she inspired my heart for music because of her own passion for music and she cultivated a safe space to ensure that my passion and skillset would flourish. She is diligent and hardworking and will bring out the best in you. Ali will walk the journey with you, celebrating the wins, championing each step of progress you make. She is graced to do what she does, she has both the heart and skill set to make your learning journey unique, fun and fulfilling. One thing I’d say of Ali is I ALWAYS felt believed in and I could not recommend her enough for any young person wanting to grow in their musical ability.
